Today, we welcomed our first child named Emma into our family. She was born at 6:05pm on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. She weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.
We took Christina to the hospital at 8pm on Tuesday, May 26 and they induced her labor at 10pm. Twenty hours and five minutes later, Emma was born.
It’s 10:45pm now on 5/27. Tina and Emma are sleeping. And soon, I hope to be doing the same thing.

Tina went to the doctor today for her final check up and as we suspected, they told her they wanted to induce labor. Her due date was 5/23 and as of today, Tina is 40 weeks + 3 days.
So, we got to the hospital around 8pm this evening as per their instruction. They induced labor at around 10pm. Poor Tina had to endure 3 pokes until they successfully implanted her IV. Emma’s (the baby for those who haven’t been paying attention) heart rate sounds good, but she keeps moving around and so the monitor keeps losing her heartbeat. She had the hiccups earlier. It’s 10:30pm now and Tina is trying to sleep. Mom and I are spending the night here, of course.

At this point, it seems fairly certain that we will get to see Emma for the first time tomorrow.

Today, we were advised of a change in the corporate policy from Catbert, the Evil Director of Human Resources concerning vacation time.
The previous policy was that each head-count (not sure the term employee makes sense here and I’m really sure Team Player makes absolutely no sense in this context) accrued about 3 hours of vacation time per pay period for a total of 10 vacation days per year. Employees were allowed to carry over unused vacation time each year and after a certain maximum accrual limit was reached, excess vacation time would automatically be paid out.
The new policy is that each head-count now gets a bank of 10 days vacation at the beginning of the year. (Yes, they’re instituting a policy in the middle of the year that takes effect at the beginning of the year. And, whether it’s retroactive back to 1/1/09 or doesn’t take effect until 1/1/10 is any body’s guess. I guess we’ll eventually find out.) The new stipulation on using vacation time is use it, or lose it. Vacation time can no longer be carried over year on year. And, unused vacation time will not be paid out anymore.
To quote Helen Morgendorffer in Daria : The Teachings of Don Jake (Episode #112):
“A healthy happy family comes before work. Always. Besides, I have vacation time coming and they told me that if I don’t use it, I lose it. Damnit! Those bastards aren’t going to take away my days.”
