Shopping and working at Wal-Mart is becoming more dangerous with every passing day. From the illegal demands to see proof of purchase to the nazi t-shirts to the Wal-Mart employee being sued by Wal-Mart for money she won in an injury lawsuit, Wal-Mart continues to be the place to avoid at all costs if you value your soul.

Now, a man who refused to submit to an illegal demand to show his receipt has been convicted of misdemeanor assault. Donald Lynch, a certified public accountant, says he will appeal the verdict. The story seems to go like this … A ancient Wal-Mart door ranger asked to see Lynch’s receipt. Rightfully so, Lynch refused. So, the door ranger used illegal physical force to stop Lynch from exiting the store. Lynch then retaliated with physical force in self defense during which the door ranger ended up on the floor. Anybody with half an eye could see that Lynch should not have even been charged with a crime. If anything, the Wal-Mart door ranger should be on trial for violating Lynch’s Fourth Amendment rights. And, Wal-Mart should have to pay a hefty fine for being the evil, evil corporation behind it all.

Plane Ticket

So, I’m going to NY in May. (I say NY, but it will be north NJ which might as well be part of NY.) Christina will be there for training and I will meet up with her there and also with HB for her birthday & HL because she has no other friends. Hahaha! I wonder if she reads this blog …

I booked my ticket on Continental and after the transaction was done, there was an option to offset your carbon emissions by making a donation to Sustainable Travel International. For $3.24, I could offset my carbon emission and choose how the money was to be spent. I chose to replenish and protect forests. This is a very cool program.

$4 Gas

Alright. So, gas is going up to $4/gal this summer. It’s already about $3.40/gal here in FL. But, St. Lucie does have higher gas taxes than the surrounding areas. It pisses me off when reporters write articles about our high gas prices and say, “Oh, we don’t have it as bad as they do in the UK where gas costs $8/gal.” GMAFB. Do your homework! Ask someone in the UK how much they pay for health care. Not a freaking penny. Why? Their $8/gal gasoline is mostly taxes. And, those taxes pay for things like health care and mass transit systems. In the US, our $4/gal gasoline is a little bit of taxes that fund highway projects and a whole lotta profit for the oil companies. The money we spend on gas gets us where we’re going and fixes some potholes on I-95. The money the UK spends on gas gets them where they’re going, gives them all the health care they could ever need and maintains their mass transit systems. WTF are we doing wrong here? As usual, our system is broken and poorly run.

I did some calculations based on our current driving habits. For every 1¢ increase in the price of gas, it costs our household about an extra $18.50 each year. But, a $1.75 increase (which is what we’re facing when compared to just 2 years ago) would be an extra $3,237 for the year. That’s a big chunk of change that we could be spending elsewhere like in stores or restaurants or taking trips. But for now, we have no choice but to continue to support the record profits of BP, Chevron, Hess and all the others.

Where are we going? And, why are we in the hand basket?
