Did you know that it’s illegal for Wal-Mart to ask to see your receipt? Wait, how could that be illegal? They do it all the time!
At membership-only stores, like Sam’s Club, Costco or BJs, when you sign up for a membership, you’re agreeing to that store’s terms. Within those terms, they explicitly state that they may ask to see your receipt on your way out the door. And, as a condition of membership, you must oblige.
But, Wal-Mart isn’t a membership-only store. It’s open to the public. Anyone and everyone can shop there. Why anyone would actually want to is still just a mystery. But as such, you’re protected by the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Remember learning about that in elementary school … the Bill of Rights? So, what is the Fourth Amendment? The Fourth Amendment guards against unreasonable searches and seizures. It protects you from being illegally detained without reasonable suspicion that you have committed a crime.
Since Wal-Mart doesn’t require a membership to shop there, if they do not clearly and doubtlessly witness you shoplift, they cannot ask to see your receipt. If they only see you walking out the door with an item, but didn’t witness you take it off the shelf and bypass the cash registers, they cannot ask to see your receipt and they cannot detain you. Why? The presence of reasonable suspicion is missing. Simply watching you walk out the door isn’t sufficient reasonable suspicion. Therefore, they cannot legally ask to see your receipt and they certainly cannot stop you from leaving the store. After paying for your merchandise, your legal obligation to the store is complete and you are not required to submit to illegal requests to show proof of purchase on your way out the door.
Now, take a look at this: http://consumerist.com/362866/detained-and-harassed-at-walmart-for-not-showing-a-receipt. And, stop shopping at Wal-Mart!

We had fun in Orlando this weekend. We drove up Friday evening and came home Sunday afternoon. This is what we did …
- Fri., Feb. 29
- Drove up to Orlando on the Florida Turnpike. Left at 7pm. Stopped half way at a rest stop. Arrived around 9:30pm.
- Had dinner at IHOP.
- Sat., Mar. 1
- Woke up around 5:30am. Couldn’t fall back to sleep. Had breakfast at the hotel.
- Went to the HSN Outlet. It kinda sucked. They sell a lot of open box merchandise that customers have returned. So, who knows if the stuff even works. And, it seemed to be in a pretty rough part of the neighborhood.

- Stopped at Dunkin Donuts.
- Went to Ikea. Bought some hangers and kitchen towels. Mom bought a picture frame. Ida got tired and spent most of the time sitting on a bench outside.
- Had lunch at Sweet Tomatoes. It was so crowded. The food is okay, but you feel like you’re eating in a hospital cafeteria.
- Went to the Prime Outlets. A lot of Europeans there taking advantage of the weak dollar.
- Came back to the hotel and took a nap.

- Had dinner at Carrabba’s. It was excellent. Tina’s cousins met us there.
- Stopped at the DoubleTree hotel and bought 2 tins of their cookies. Yummmmmm…
- Went in the hot tub at the hotel. Went to bed around 11pm.
- Sun., Mar. 2.
- Had breakfast at the hotel.
- Stopped at Chevron and got gas. Also put air in the front passenger tire. I think it has a slow leak, but I am due for new tires anyway.
- Went back to the Prime Outlets and hit some more stores.
- Went to the Designer Center Outlets. That is another outlet mall by the same company about a mile away from the Prime Outlets.
- Left Orlando around 1pm. Stopped half way at a rest stop. Arrived home around 3:30pm. Ida slept most of the way home.

- Stopped at Jersey Mike’s Subs for lunch after we got off the Turnpike. It sucked. Not recommended. They have no idea how to make a hoagie. They should be ashamed to have the word Jersey in their name. They’re not Jersey subs. They’re subs made by morons. Call the place Mike’s Morons. That would be more appropriate.
